- <p> It's hard to explain, but Italians go gaga for WOODY
- ALLEN. He has signed up with Coop, Italy's biggest foodstuffs
- chain, to write and direct (but not star in) five TV commercials
- dealing with health and environmental matters. American viewers
- will not get to see the spots unless they own a terrific
- satellite dish, but here is one possible story line, suffused
- in a darkly brooding Berg manesque ambiance: a woman named, say,
- Mia upbraids a man named, say, Marcello, who is tying square
- knots in fresh pasta. There ensues a lively, if oblique,
- discussion of Wittgenstein, Freud and the existential
- consequences of global warming, whereupon they fall in love and
- forsake osso buco for a lifetime diet of organically grown
- radicchio. Allen will harvest a reported $2 million for the
- series.
